The Boys of the Dixie Pig by Stacy Childs

5.0

It is my habit to immediately start reading a new book upon finishing one. In reading THE BOYS OF THE DIXIE PIG, I have come to realize that this might not always be the best thing to do because of my eclectic choices in books. Every author has his or her own style which is evident no matter the plot and characters about which he or she is writing. Because of this reading style, if you will, I immediately thought this book a 3 star effort. It was pretty much a knee-jerk reaction that disproves the first impression theory. Stylistically jarring as the opening pages were, I soldiered on.

The boys are five men in their sixties that have known each other since their school days. They've gone their separate ways, but are reunited in a tale that might be science fiction, or a mystery, or a medical thriller, or maybe a treatise filled with political cynicism, or just a book about five good ole boys from Texas. People of a certain age will remember Donny & Marie opening their variety show with "I'm a little bit country..." "I'm a little bit rock 'n' roll." This book is a lot like that... A little bit of this, and a little bit of that. Ultimately all of the bits come together in a really good story. To be honest, I didn't think that Stacy Childs would be able to pull all the threads together into a cohesive, single plot that would work but dang it all, he did.

THE BOYS OF THE DIXIE PIG is definitely a good read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for something new and different to read.
