The Leavers by Lisa Ko
2.0

This is an extremely unpopular opinion, apparently, but I did not like The Leavers, mostly because I did not like Deming/Daniel, even before his mother left him. I thought that he was whiny and had no determination. I got that his addictions and faults were caused by his tough childhood, but I expected him to grow. After reading about 260 pages, I started questioning when the character development would start. Also, it really bothered me how he was constantly comparing his adoptive parents, Peter and Kay, to his biological mother, Polly. Yes, Kay and Peter had their faults, but they really loved Daniel/Deming, and I never saw that love reciprocated. And Daniel could love both without a contest.

Polly’s parts were much better. She had this fierceness that Deming lacked. She also had a tough life, but she tried to make it better, unlike Deming. Her plot was much better than Deming’s, and I wanted to know what happened to her and why she left her son. I felt like putting the book down while reading Deming’s parts.

I liked the topic of this book, and I learned a lot about the life of illegal immigrants. I think that this book was about an important topic, but I found the main character too irritating to enjoy it.
