These Broken Stars
by Meagan Spooner, Amie Kaufman
Everything about These Broken Stars was a surprise to me. I checked it out of the library on a whim after seeing a mention of it online. For the first half of the book, it was a solid 3 star - fun but with prose that was a little too purple at times. It was an interesting mix: one part Firefly and one part Titanic. However, about halfway through the book, the authors threw a curve and added a dash of Lost, and I was suddenly very interested. Then, there is a super twisty twist in the final third that allows a character to work through some very real and raw grief, and suddenly a book set in a universe far, far away felt very down to earth. There are plot holes here but the space opera is so fun and weird that the reader forgives them. Sometimes it is good to be surprised!
