Marissa is the Queen of Retellings! She has a way of using a fairytale you are familiar with (straw) and spinning it into a new tale (Gold). HA get it?
This story follows Serilda who has blessed by the god of stories. People do not trust her.
One night, she saves some creatures from being hunted by the Erlking (Leader of the Wild Hunt) and lies to his face about her being able to turn straw into gold!
On the next full moon, he comes for her, and makes her do just that. She can't. But she finds a boy in the Castle that can do just that, he goes by Gild.
I gotta say Serilda is a Queen of making and getting out of messes. She solves things temporarily, but they come back.
I loved that Marissa used the storytelling as a way to give us the background truth. Serilda thinks she's making up stories, but she is speaking forgotten truths. Once I caught on I was ENGROSSED!
She needs to figure out what the Erlking is after, who Gild is, and what is the history of the castle and its inhabitants. Gild is a sort of Rumplestilkin and tethered to the castle ( I was screaming, HE IS THE PRINCEEEEE!!!!)
Also, how unhinged that girly promises her first born to Gild, and then he spins the gold, and then they do the do, and she ends up PREGNANT. Everyone around her knew before her... girly.!!! ahhh!!
Good news is she loves him and he loves her
Bad news is he doesn't know yet and the Erlking wants her baby
But magic has a price! Can't wait to see what happens next
