4.5

alright, i've had time to kind of process all of this. i finished the last part of this in one sitting.

this is a 4.5 for me and the only reason that is because there was so much worldbuilding thrown at me at once. then there were all these side characters and it was hard to keep up with everyone. besides from that I absolutely loved this book

first off, why did Sel have to be so insufferable? he couldn't just sit down and let everything play out instead of being a dick. for 75% of the book I didn't like him but by the end he was alright. but also the chapter from his pov. now nick on the other hand i love him; was i upset that bree was falling for a white man. yes because sista get it together, but i see why she likes him. i want to know where this little triangle is going. i actually kind of like this love triangle, its done in a different way that makes it enjoyable.

now the plot overall, it was all over the place but i like how it came together in the end. all the dots started connecting and things started making sense. from bree and her powers to the order itself and the way the magic works. then nick's dad pissed me off to no end. i had real hope there and he ended up letting me down in the end. the way he defended her only to do what he did in the end made me so upset and so mad.

now bree dealt with a lot of racism, which made the book feel more real. made me connect more to her as a character because racism is real. people just you just because you are black and bree got a taste of that. there were the direct attacks and the not so direct attacks toward her, but i think she handled it pretty well because it would have been a different story if she wasn't mature enough to take it. also just be as a black character and how tracy included things about her heritage and her hair. it just was done so well and that's another aspect that i loved about the book.

i also loved the small little pieces of queer rep that was in the book. it may not have been a main focus but at least it was included. this is an urban fantasy book so if it wasn't included then i would have been a little upset. in this day and age, yes, we as a queer community are a minority in itself but we are there. more than people realize and for William and tor and greer be queer, i really like that.

and finally lets talk about the ending without adding any spoilers. i was not expecting that. at some point in the beginning i was trying to figure out where it was going to go but i finally gave up. then the thing about sel came out, and the stuff about bree and her mom. all of it was just so shocking and it made it ten times more enjoyable. i couldn't tell you where it was all going and the way it ended it shocked me to no end. i can't wait to hop in book 2. i don't know when I'll read it but it will be soon. I'm too impatient to wait and so i need to read it.
