Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson

Reread June-July 2020
“Spectacles. They were kind of like a hat for smart people.”

Another great reread. I really enjoy all of the information from era 1 that starts coming back into this, particularly as the kandra are reintroduced into the story and we learn more about them and what they do now.

The bromance between Wax and Wayne is still excellent and I like the developing relationships with the other characters from the first novel.

Reread July 2018
While I am really enjoying rereading this series, it also makes me really want the last book in my hands.

This series is filled with characters that I absolutely adore. Wax, Wayne, Steris, Marasi, they all having something to offer. Wayne is possibly my favorite of the bunch. I laugh out loud while reading about him, but he also gives me plenty of deeper things to think about.

I remember thinking this was darker on my first read. The ending is rather bleak, but otherwise it has a lot of the same tone as the first novel. Sure, it deals with murder investigations, but that doesn't mean it has to have a really dark tone.

The kandra play a large role in this installment and I really enjoyed having them back in the picture. TenSoon was one of my favorite characters in the first trilogy (but really, who wasn't one of my favorites?) and finding out what happened with them was great.

Now I am eager to jump into my reread of The Bands of Mourning. I'm hoping that I enjoy it as much as I did this one. And Sanderson, please get the last book out so I can read it.

Original Read Thoughts
This was so good. And sad. That ending was insane. I really need the third book!
