The Dream of a Ridiculous Man by Fyodor Dostoevsky
challenging
dark
inspiring
reflective
medium-paced
4.0
The seeming meaninglessness of everything nearly leads a man to suicide, in fact to actually experience this suicide through a revelatory experience, but then get a do-over. A path away from hopelessness is found, with the bonus of providing a new mission in life.
The first half is a pretty pointed description of a personal battle against an insidious form of nihilism (with maybe a bit of solipsism mixed in) which could have only been written by someone familiar with such feelings. It's a perfect example of a critical existential crisis in brief really, one with the power to provoke susceptible readers at least a little bit. It's definitely thought stimulation material, and as such quite worth the quick read.
