The Final Gambit
by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
There reaches a point in every reading of a YA series where I just become annoyed with the author and I reached that point in spades with the Final Gambit. Things that grated on me:
- Saying everyone's full names too frequently. Is this a cultural thing? Should I be using my family's middle names more often?
- Dialogue that feels too pine-y for everyday conversation
- Dialogue that feels too stereotypical
- Contrived scenarios to push the puzzle-solving forward รก la National Treasure 2.
Despite all that, it's an engaging read and so I still rated this a 3.
