I have mixed feelings on this one. It was interesting to have such an intimate look at this medical condition, and it examines the ethics of multiple societal issues in a way that makes you consider both sides (check content warnings for this one, mine below). It impresses me that both lawyers make good points and I feel as conflicted as a jury.

There were a few instances of phrases/metaphors that came across as faux-depth. I’d make a little face as they happened. I’m not sure I love the extended comparison of a chronically ill child to a pastry; I see what point is trying to be made, but it doesn’t quite work for me.

The oddest thing is how little I found myself connected to any of these characters. It didn’t make me emotional at all despite content that should. The ending disappointed me and was a bit predictable now that I’ve read several of JP’s novels.

If you like JP and are interested in the premise, go for it. But I don’t think I’d widely recommend.
