I found this novel absorbing and well written except for the abrupt ending.  I loved the main character Li-yan and her mother. I did not particularly enjoy Haley, but I did sympathize with her.  While Li-yan and Haley navigated many difficulties in their lives, Li-yan seemed to have been perhaps more successful - though I am not sure that is the correct word for it.
I enjoyed the unique culture of a minority group in China and how their belief system worked to destroy the very system they fought to preserve.
