People We Meet on Vacation
by Emily Henry
i can’t believe how much i loved this. i can’t believe i loved it as much as, and actually probably more than beach read.
poppy is someone who feels so real and so like myself it hurts. she loves traveling and making connections and she loves her family and friends and job, but at the end of the day, she doesn’t know what she wants out of life. she is living her dream but is unfulfilled and unhappy and doesn’t know why. so she goes about trying to fix it by returning to her best friend she’s fallen out with because of unspoken feelings, and the act of vacationing which used to bring her so much joy.
i love emily henry and her writing so much. she’s giving single pov which is so underrated and amazing in this genre that is horrendously oversaturated with 2D, uninteresting male povs i couldn’t care less about if i tried. she’s also giving representation for the girlies who don’t talk during sex except to say “i love you” which is a huge step up from the concerning dirty talk of her last book. she’s giving low budget carrie bradshaw with a premature midlife crisis. and everything she is giving i am eating up.
alex is the practical, stoic, sensitive male lead of my dreams. their banter and their love for each other is an amazing core to this book.
the whole premise of this, the execution, the description.. flawless. i’m so serious when i said i was eating it up. the trips and transitioning slow reveal timeline kept this nicely balanced and kept me intrigued. i saw myself so much in poppy, her mental health struggles, her lack of direction, her life and desires and feelings. don’t get me wrong - i loved alex, i felt connected and could relate to him in some aspects too, and their romance made me so happy (i love friends to lovers. i LOVE slow as fuck slow burn) - but poppy is just the star of this book for me and maybe my new absolute favorite fictional character.
i don’t think i could have loved this more if i tried.
i also am forever indebted to julia whelan. i started e-reading this book, but switched to the audiobook because i just love how she performs. it was the right choice.
