Memed, My Hawk by Yaşar Kemal
4.0

I chose to read this book to explore a culture and country new to me. It's not easy to books by Turkish authors, and even though many sources pointed me to Memed, My Hawk as a renown classic, it wasn't even available in English on Kindle. The story is mostly a coming-of-age one, and of an olden time when the central government was weak and corrupt and becoming a brigand could be a noble profession. Yasar Kemal, who lived a fascinating life and became a political prisoner, paints a vivid, often dreary, image of ordinary working class life in Southern Turkey, far from the towering minarets of Istanbul. I don't think the translation does him justice - I've seen Kemal described a lyrical wielder of the Turkish language and this translation is not lyrical.
