I'm going to keep this review short. I know this book is long, but it is worth it. It is on one level an incredibly complex and well thought out fantasy story that has heroes, villains, and complicated (yet very familiar) political systems. It is a commentary on colonialism and capitalism, but also in its own way a love letter to language and the power of words to do more than we ever think they can.

It is about friendship, and fighting for change in a system that might not ever fall. It is about connection to people, to family, to place and a broad interrogation of identity.

It is a beautifully written novel that, while not for everyone, is one of my favorite books of 2023.
