Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
4.0

This came across sort of like I’d imagine sci-fi is… which I don’t really read, watch or listen to. It was slow goings but I managed to finish it, did I have to push myself to pick up my earphones? Mmm yes, yet it stayed with me and after reading it I kept thinking of it.

The premise is of a ‘feminist utopia in which men have been phased out’, women become pregnant without any need for partner participation if ya get me. It centers around three white male explorers discovering a female-only society and what follows when they spend time there.

There’s no denying it’s an interesting short read, not because of the plot however - but because this was written by a female in 1915. It’s entertaining because of that and that’s why it gets the stars really.

It was almost comical in parts. Thinking of this 1915 female writing away, just ripping the pi*s out of these men, who very possibly were characters built upon men she had met.

Gilman herself is a product of her time and class, there’s a lot wrong with the book, but there was a lot wrong with 1915 and the oppression of just about everyone who wasn’t white and male.

I’m glad I read it, just to take a peek into what feminism might have looked a little like in America over one hundred years ago.

I can see the premise being taken and essentially re-written for screen oddly - I kept envisioning Avatar-like women!

It wasn’t a page turner I’ll admit-though I would love to study Charlotte herself.
