Coraline by Neil Gaiman
4.0

A lot of people talk about how scary this book is and wonder how it could be for children, but this is just the right amount of scary for kids (and adults). I saw the movie when it came out when I was in middle school, with no idea that there even was a book. I saw it with a friend, and I remember being the only one of the two of us who liked the film (she thought it was too weird, we're no longer friends for unrelated reasons). When I was in high school I discovered Neil Gaiman and finally found out that he'd written the book the movie I'd liked so much was based on. Even though I was a little out of the intended age range, I really enjoyed the book then. Coraline was a very capable heroine, someone I could admire but also relate to, which I think is one of the most important things about this book. Coraline's wishes and fears are very relatable, even to older children, and to follow her journey was an incredibly riveting experience.
