The Break by Katherena Vermette

  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes

5.0

I read The Strangers first, and, while they can definitely be read as stand alone novels, the ending of the Break really blew my mind given the connections in the book.

The story yelling surrounding the one central plot point from all the different characters point of views was just artfully done. Somehow we got a clear view into each characters personality and life, without being completely lost in the actual story that was going on. This novel was heart wrenching and dealt with some difficult themes. It really made you feel for the characters and wish for change.

One of my favourite quotes that really resonated with me:
“[…] was just silent for as long as she could be. She thought she could heal there, but she was only resting, she was only standing still waiting for the real work to begin. Waiting ’til she found the words.”
