I wanted to love this book so much! And it was good, the audiobook narrator was fantastic, but I’m still not entirely sure what the point of the story was all about. I know it’s about Zhu’s belief that she will become great, but the way it comes about is so roundabout and a little bit tiresome.
I also don’t know what the second storyline really has to do with this book. I guess it will become apparent and I kind of know where it’s headed, where it headed several times during this book, but it felt, again, tiresome.
Also, this isn’t a book to not pay attention to while reading. It takes all your attention and needs it.
There’s also strong poppy war vibes here which I may have enjoyed more if I weren’t currently reading the burning god.
Still, I love the culture in this book, and I will continue on with the series, but I fear it’s one that will need to be read together.
