His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, a Life by Jonathan Alter

4.0

I always like Jimmy Carter. I actually saw him speak when he was running for president. After reading this book, I like him more.
The book is thorough and balanced. It is not afraid to point out Carter's shortcomings. At the same time, it provides a perspective that is largely hidden. For example, Carter did get the hostages released, it was a last-minute trick of the Iranians to snub him and release them after Regan's inauguration. Never- the-less, Jimmy can be a bit prickly as the biography amply points out. I wish I were as good a man as Jimmy.
