Aunt Maria by Diana Wynne Jones
5.0

A very clever book from a very masterful writer of children's literature. In Aunt Maria we have an excellent villain, an inventive plot, and magic that explores the power of words, feelings and free thought. There is also the flip side of magic, the kind we impose on ourselves in silence, negativity, and going along with the status quo without thinking clearly. DWJ is excellent at portraying these very realistic phenomena, the power of thought and words, through her fantasy. Mig, Chris & their mother are in for it when they visit Aunt Maria on vacation. They are drawn into her web of fake sweetness and tea parties, and held tight by her social strings until they have the sense to wake up and cut themselves, and the rest of Cranbury-on-Sea, loose.
