The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel

5.0

This book is so many things, and until about half-way through it was all quite confusing as I struggled to remember dates, places, people, relevant facts, etc. It's an art history book, a historical non-fiction novel, a dissection of the Nazi German government, a review of the Holocaust and sprinkled throughout are brief and extensive biographies on some pretty amazing people. Towards the end it all came together into a beautifully written ending that made me cry, as do most stories about WWII. It was quite long and I wouldn't necessarily recommend that everyone read this book, but I WOULD encourage everyone to read at least an article on the subject. Update: The movie was also brilliant. Everyone should either read the book or watch the movie (or both!)
