Re-read in 2013 after seeing the movie. This is one of the rare cases when I like the novel and its movie adaptation equally well!

A fun and easy read.
Shannon Hale had me at the first paragraph:
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a thirty-something woman in possession of a satisfying career and fabulous hairdo must be in want of very little, and Jane Hayes, pretty enough and clever enough, was certainly thought to have little to distress her. There was no husband, but those weren’t necessary anymore.
The omniscient narrator is witty and funny like Jane Austen’s (as in, The walkers tried various other topics on for size, but the Weather fit too loosely, Mr. Templeton’s Disappearance was too short, and What Might Be for Dinner pinched a bit tight in the midsection.) but with a quirky twenty-first-century twist (as in, “Argh,” Jane arghed.)
I can’t wait to see the movie version!
