Alles umsonst by Walter Kempowski

There was a point halfway through, when I thought ok, there's merit to simply being in their shoes, and seeing the unpredictable fortune and often mediocrity of the outwash of war.. day after day of unending life despite the proximity of death. But it was only a glimmer of realization. The author is renowned, but I hope this is not the work that made his name.
