Faithless in Death by J.D. Robb
5.0

the last two books were so good. but at the same time i acknowledge that they were so much like a fairytale. how could eve practically singlehandedly with little to no help 1) catch the serial killer with 500+ kills that all the agencies in the world couldn’t catch for 10+ years or 2) uncover this huge cult that was spread globally which again agencies couldn’t uncover for multiples years. but eve did both in less than a week. but whatever, i liked it nevertheless.

i love when detectives call eve “loo” - so adorable.

natural order hit too close to home with some aspects that happen now in our world. i was so invested in cops finishing the cult.

🤌🏻

“Roarke gets …” Sentimental, she thought as they joined the river of people crossing the street. “Ideas. We did that pond thing, so—”
“You did it? It’s done? You said he was going to put one in.”
“Yeah, it’s done. It’s nice. It’s got those things that float on it.”
“Lily pads?” Peabody sighed.
“Those, and like a stone sort of skirt and plants and a bench, and he decided we should plant the tree ourselves.”
“Awww!”
“Social club’s closed,” Eve announced”

“Good, solid. But I don’t do the wiggle and toss.”
“’Cause you’ve got no hips and really short hair. But inside, you’re wiggling and tossing.”

“Considerate of you.”
“Oh, you know me. I’m made of considerate.”
More than you think, he mused, then did the same with her shirt. “Due to my very minor injuries,” he began.
“You were a bruised, bloody, aching mess.”
“Comparatively minor injuries. I may have held back, just a bit, myself.”

“You could say her cold comes from the natural order of things.” Eve started the car. “Let’s go heat her up.”

“Instinctively, she glanced toward him, then slapped her hand over her eyes. “Jesus Christ!”
The tie, from knot to tail, showcased a bug-eyed, pee-yellow-beaked, wildly pink flamingo.
“Can’t blame me for this one. My wife gave it to me.”
“You’ve infected her.”
“Anyways, Mira’s in your office.”
“Good. I need medical attention.”

“If I knew the identity of the killer, I’d be making an arrest instead of talking to you.”
“Digging then. I’d be happy to have a little tête-à-tête with some tit for tat included.”
“You’ve already got tits, and I don’t have a tat.”

“Eve merely grunted. “Your name’s bigger on this one than on The Icove Agenda.”
Smiling, Nadine fluttered her lashes. “Is it? I didn’t notice.”

“You’re not going to explain it all to me or we’ll be here for a month. What you’re going to do is look at this—the systems—and the main house, to start, like it has a zillion hot white diamonds inside, and you want them. You’re going to figure out how you’d get in, get to every one of these buildings, and steal the shit out of them.”
His lips curved slowly. “Well then, wouldn’t that be fun?”

“Hell, she thought, it was only Peabody in there. So she walked to Roarke, wrapped her arms around him for one precious moment. And stepped back when Peabody said, “Aw.”
“Keep your aws to yourself.”

“Roarke took a moment in the next timed gap, shut off their recorders.
“What the—”
“I have to say it. My Christ, what a pair we’d have been.”
The absolute delight in his voice tickled her soft spots.
”You move like smoke, smoke with nerves of steel and unshakable focus. We’d have romped the globe, you and I, plucking every precious thing we wanted. What a pity we didn’t meet in some lovely alternate world where you weren’t a cop.”
