dougdale 's review for:
The Poisonwood Bible
by Barbara Kingsolver
I loved the first half of the book. An examination of the forces that shape us and drive us to be something we were not supposed to be. Guilt never given up leads to judgement of everyone around us. The sins of the father shape the thinking of the child. A wife trapped and destroyed.
But the second half meandered and went nowhere. There was no redemption, no hope found. The Christian legalism of the father was never replaced by Christian grace. There was little to no hope.
It was almost a great book, but in then end, it wasn't.
