The way this book was written over 100 years ago and can still apply its messages on communalism, nationalism and the role of religion to modern-day India is just a testament to Tagore. His prose is beautiful, and though the plot is slow, the characters are so rich it’s worth devouring every page.

Also huge love to Lalita - a queen ahead of her time - I can’t believe she’s meant to be a teenager! Special shoutout to my other favourites: Poreshbabu and Anandamoyi - we all wish we could have parents or caregivers like them 🫶
