The Marriage Bargain by Jennifer Probst
3.0

—Enemies-to-lovers
—Opposites attract
—Best friend's brother
—Marriage of convenience
—Romcom
—A misunderstanding, that gives way to a bit of angst.

Polar opposites:
She's a Mets fan, he's a Yankees fan.
She almost runs an animal shelter, he can't stand animals.
She comes from a happy and boisterous family, he comes from a family that's no longer a family.
She likes green olives, he likes black.
He listens to wordless music like Mozart and Beethoven, and she... Well she's the opposite.

Okay so the heroine's literally conjuring up the love spell on the first chapter. Like no, she's not a magician. But she's a quirky poem-writing book-loving bookstore owner like that. And I like it.

If sexism was a soul, it'd be Nick Ryan's.
But that's alright, coz it's immensely satisfying to watch Alexa put him and his chauvinism in place.

Although upon completion of this book, I realized that for all his sexist comments on women, Nick never actually treated a woman in that manner— may it be his sis Maggie, or his ex Gabrielle, or even Alexa.

So these two... there's not much of a banter but they're definitely fighting all over the place. What with the two being polar opposites, and Alexa in particular having an adorable short-fuse.

I love how Nick comes around towards the end. It all felt so perfect. This was a packing and satisfying read. Alexa really does turn his world upside down.

Quotes and Thoughts

“I guess you’re right. Some things remain the same. Others keep expanding.”
Her breath caught at the jab, but she surprised him when she smiled. “And other things remain small.”

Bro this exchange. Slay gurl, slayyy!

“Yes, you did. When I was fourteen, you told me I was filling out in all the wrong places.”
“Hell, woman, I meant your breasts. I was a snotty teenager who wanted to torture you. You were always beautiful.”
--
ok why is this weirdly adorable.

They reminded her of puffed up peacocks who inwardly wished to be kept in line by the right woman.

That is such a bookish take. I can actually see that this Alexa is a book lover, lol.

As if on cue, he looked up and read the title of the book right beside her in full presentation.
How to Give a Woman Multiple Orgasms.
Shit.

Alexa had shared an important part of herself with a room of strangers. With Maggie. With him. Open for criticism, vulnerable to the whims of others, she took what she felt and made him feel it, too.

With methodical motions, she took out the ice cream, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and cherries.

oh lord, she's me. She's one of us.

Then she realized she was actually fantasizing about Nick making a scene and dragging her off to seduce her. Like in one of her romance novels.
Sure. Mr. Logical himself. Might as well read science fiction and wait for the aliens to take over the world. That was much more likely.
