The beginning rapidly stages a perfect setup for what are soon revealed to be essentially karmic implications for the story's antihero. Yes, it's immediately satisfying that one so insensitive to the terror and suffering he's caused finds out what it's like to be on the other side of that. 

It's an efficiently executed short story, yet I find myself wishing it went just a little bit further. Like upon leaving the island the guy then gets eaten by sharks or something. I think that would have worked to top everything off nicely for me ;)
