Ben and I listened to this on our drive down to LA last week. I knew it was a wintery story, but I had no idea Father Christmas would actually show up (to give all the kids weapons?!). It was a nice short book that we could finish before we arrived. Michael York (Asher Fleming from Gilmore Girls!) did a lovely job with the voices, though the volume levels were definitely off in this recording. Probably doesn’t help that we were listening in heavy rain on the freeway. I knew Aslan is a Christ allegory, but I had no clue it would be so heavy handed. Lewis follows the Easter story almost beat for beat. Aslan sacrifices himself for someone who betrays him, the stone table/tomb imagery, two women find the table/tomb empty, obviously the whole resurrection…it’s a little too on-the-nose in my opinion. Nonetheless, I can see why this is an enduring, beloved fantasy tale.
