Beautiful Redemption by Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl

3.0

Okay, so I finished this awhile ago and am only now getting around to writing the "review." (Not my best work.)

This was my least favorite book in the series, and I'm not sure if I can fully explain why. For the most part, it has to do with the plot. Now, before I go any further, I have to say: I really applaud Garcia and Stohl for NOT following the conventional plotline. Or adhering to the rule that just because the protagonist is the narrator automatically means they don't die. (George R. R. Martin would tell you this is a silly rule, but, you know, different genres, different rules.) I don't think I can remember reading a book that has a plot just like this one, so brownie points for that.

That being said...the plot stalled for me. It was kinda like in HP&DH, when the trio go on their fugitive camping expedition - and it feels like it goes on for PAGES AND PAGES when, in actuality, it's really only a chapter or two. BR was a lot like this--the journey Ethan is on is just...painstakingly slow. Which is probably why I could put it down so easily.

To be fair--things pick up in the end. And the action gets good. Especially as far as supporting characters are concerned, because let's be honest: Link & Ridley, John & Liv, Macon--these are the best characters in the book. Ethan just doesn't read as convincingly male as some other narrators do. And it kinda works, because he's filling the stereotypical "Girl" role in YA Paranormal Romance, right? Lena is the supernatural, the powerful one, the protector. But the supporting characters take away from the romance-plot, making it much less heavy-handed (*coughTwilightcough*) which I appreciate.
