After the Wedding by Courtney Milan

5.0

Like many other reviewers here, I adore Courtney Milan’s work. I have read her entire catalogue, and IMHO, this book is one of her best. Readers should know that this book tells a story that is quite sad in some ways; Camilla has suffered terribly, and though Adrian had the love of supportive parents and siblings (unlike Camilla), he has also endured significant loss, as well as the cruelties of racism. In spite of the emotional weight apparent here, parts of this book are laugh-out-loud funny. That is one of the things I love most about Ms. Milan’s writing—she knows how to use levity to keep her stories from becoming too dark. The wit and intelligence of her characters is always evident, yet her writing is so emotionally powerful. That is not an easy thing to pull off.

For those who read Ms. Milan’s The Pursuit of..., those characters have a connection to this book that pleased me to no end. That was a lovely surprise. The ending of this book sets up the next one beautifully, and I cannot wait to read the rest of this series.
