How Ableism Fuels Racism: Dismantling the Hierarchy of Bodies in the Church by Lamar Hardwick

informative fast-paced

5.0

This was surprisingly a great book and look into Christianity and its downfalls in exacerbating the inequities that we see in society. The author (an autistic, disabled Black man/preacher) was able to connect scripture to disability politics and dispel some myths/theological thoughts on disability and original sin. He also connected ableism back to the US American chattel slavery system and how that connects back to the current ableist and racist medical system. The author even talked about the difference between the white church/white Christianity and the Black church. He was able to come from a theological, historical, and personal standpoint which further enhanced his point about how racism fuels ableism and how it appears in the church. I am not a Christian, but this was so needed. I will be buying a hardcopy to annotate. This was my second five-star read of the year and it was well deserved.
