I did not like this book. The world building is amazing, I even like the magic system even though it breaks its own rules and has become pretty convoluted at this point. But the things that really irritate me, things that almost made me DNF this book are he characters and the plot.

I just can't take all the back and forth! Oh we won, the war is over. Nope just kidding we've been fooled. Wow another battle, we won, so happy for us! Nope actually we were tricked again.. We have a fool proof plan this time, they don't even know we're coming, this will totally work. Oops, they figured it out and now we're caught again. The final battle, they're going to surrender the monarchy is done for! We came out on top, finally the war is over. Actually nope you've all been captured!
Once is fine, twice is even surprising but 4 or 5 times in the same book is just tired...
And the character conflicts! Zelie hates Amari, no she doesn't. Actually yes she does. Amari hates Inan, actually no she doesn't, actually yes she does. These are stubborn, headstrong people and yet they're so quick to forgive people who have stabbed them in the back (LITERALLY) or they're so quick to hate and TRY TO SACRIFICE, the people they say they "love". It feels like none of their motivations are even real, they just exist to move the story along in an unnatural way!!! I really wanted to like this book but I couldn't.
