Friends have been pushing me to read this for years now but I had always been put off because I'm not a big LitRPG fan, but having watched the film and enjoyed it, I finally got round to pulling my finger out and reading it...

With the benefit of hundreds of previous reviews, I get that this book polarises opinions and some people put it down on the basis of "Was there no pop culture worth revisiting after 2000?" or "Do we really need to live through the 80's again?", but it's about one man's personal pop culture preferences, not the world at large.

For me it was a pleasant romp down memory lane, and whilst it went way beyond my personal geekdom, I did enjoy the bulk of the references.

From an audiobook standpoint, Will Wheaton just doesn't cut the mustard these days with his lack of characterisation and presumably got the gig because he's namechecked in the book.  This would be so much better with someone like Ray Porter, Christopher Ragland or Luke Daniels at the helm...
