Moriarty the Patriot, Vol. 1 by Ryōsuke Takeuchi
4.0

So, this a very engaging reimagination of Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes.

Rather than being portrayed as a villain or ne’er-do-well, Moriarty is reimagined as a crafty orphan reluctantly adopted into an affluent home. He was adopted for purely performative reasons — i.e to make the wealthy Moriarty home appear benevolent to the unfortunate. When the Moriarty family is tragically killed in a staged house fire, young Moriarty assumes the family name and with the help of Albert, the oldest Moriarty son who is sympathetic, becomes a kind of Robin Hood. Now dubbed James Moriarty, he acts as a “crime consultant” who goes up against the bourgeoisie. Moriarty makes himself into a representative for England’s lower classes who, like himself, often suffer unbearable burdens so that the rich can benefit. With few opportunities for social mobility, this suffering is an endless cycle.

Moriarty uses his wits and his influence strike back against greedy landowners and insufferable rich folk who treat poor people as disposable trash.

So far, it’s a super compelling story and I’m looking forward to reading more~
