I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Joe Rantz, the University of Washington crew and its coaches. I was amazed and inspired by the fortitude this group of young men dipslayed in the mid 30's in their quest for gold. The odds and hardships that Rantz and teammates overcame would have seemed insurmountable to most people but they persevered and won gold in Berlin.
I came away from this book with a much better appreciation for the sport of rowing as well struggles that my grandparents and their generation faced through the Depression.
I also found this book to hold many lessons about leadership, teamwork, love and trust. This group of young men and their coaches, Ulbrickson, Bolles and Pocock are true American treasures and I'm so glad that Brown was able to capture this story before it was lost.
