I’ll start by saying I really enjoyed the New Zealand setting and legends of this book. The Ponaturi and kēhua, along with the abilities Hoheria (and others) have. That being said, I felt like a lot happened in this book but I wasn’t connected to any of it because of the lack of character development. I don’t think the author’s style of writing was for me. There was a lot of action, one thing after another, but I didn’t feel invested in the outcome because I didn’t care about the characters very much. Bits of their personalities came through, mostly in dialogue, but I never really got connected, and it made it really hard for me to get through the book.
