Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear

3.0

The book starts out 11 years post WWI. Maisie is setting up her own business after her teacher, Maurice, retires. She takes over for him, and she gets her first client, a man wanting to know if his wife is being faithful to him. Through her investigation into his wife, she finds something else that is deeply troubling and brings up her time back as a nurse in France during the war.

At this point in the book I was so into the events that were playing out that the shift that came after was a little odd for me. I wasn't expecting to be taken back in time for such a long time. Most of the book was actually about her growing up and how she came to know Maurice, her experiences growing up working in a great house, and her education. Then it moves to her as a nurse in France. I didn't mind the story at all, but I almost wish that it had been set up this way from the beginning then moved forward, or had done the flashbacks in smaller spurts.

In the present time of the story, 11 years after the war, you as a reader have a pretty good idea of what is going on, but there are blanks that don't get spelled out until the very end.

I will definitely go and read more in this series, I might even read all 16. It was a well written book, and I also really liked the time period it was set in. I can see the rest of the series being just as good.
