I am not a huge novel girl but I wanted to give this a try. I will say, Bryan Washington's writing style is beautiful. He used no quotation marks and it had a similar feel to reading poetry. The chapters often jumped around from past to present, and stories to inner monologues. The premise of this book reminded me of the movie, "The Break-Up". The love story between Mike and Benson was heartbreaking, but at times, I struggled to care. The two characters were hard to love, I wish I had something more tangible of the good times in their relationship rather than such a flawed relationship from the start. Pros: I loved the way Washington included an interracial couple, Japanese culture, and I always love a good LGBTQIA+ read. Cons: Unless you are super into novels, the overall story fell flat for me. I feel like this one can be skipped.
