I don’t know if 3/5 stars is fully accurate to my feelings but I’m torn between my interest in the actual material and feeling let down by the writing style. Dry, dispassionate and somehow feeling like a lot of detail for not a lot of depth. Maybe it was an attempt to stay impartial, but leaning either into the subjective and the feelings of the subjects of the book, or leaning more into the historical details and context could have made this feel more engaging to me.
