Ahem. Okay.

I loved this book. It was so incredibly funny and wonderful and UNIQUE. Gideon has to be one of my favorite protagonists I've ever read. She was the perfect medium to learn this very weird and occult world through. I don't think I would have understood it in any other way. Her and Harrow's relationship is a BEAUTIFUL piece of writing, too. It is the perfect enemies to friends arc to (platonic?) soul mates. I can't wait to get my hands on Harrow. But, I've decided to wait until the third book comes out for these reasons, which is also why I'm only giving this book at 4 instead of a 5:

1) This book is horrendously complicated, and I'm not sure Muir did the best job explaining it. There were many, many times I had to turn back to understand what I was reading, and while Gideon was the best narrator for introducing you to the world, it was also this books' downfall because Gideon also had limited knowledge of what was actually happening, making it hard to parse.

2) At times, this story feels choppy, and I've heard Harrow reads worse. Things didn't always flow well, and there were parts I wish Muir had spent more time on instead of giving us five pages of describing how painful siphoning was. I'm hoping this gets better in the series.

3) I am, currently, emotionally unstable after this ending and can't possibly stand to read Harrow just to have to wait for Alecto.

This was a gorgeous, gorgeous book, but I think I may have a hard time recommending it to people unless I know they like similar books, i.e., Brandon Sanderson and the Nevernight Trilogy.
