Magical realism (or fantasy or some kind of dystopia) opens the door to discussing real monsters and angels, and how we can distinguish one from the other, how one can become the other, how safety is born from awareness, from being open to the truth and not fearing it, because only with open eyes can we see good and evil and distinguish one from the other.
This an amazing short YA book about Jam and how she brings forth a creature from her mother’s painting to supposedly hunt a monster, but there’s supposed to be no monsters to hunt, after all they are supposed to be extinct where she’s from. The truth is people were just closing their eyes to the truth, to feel protected, but now Jam won’t be able to do that anymore not when the creature, a monster in appearance, tells her the real monster it is hunting is in her bff’s, Redemption, house. Jam has to accept it then, since the risk of it being true is too great for her not to. So, she will befriend Pet, the creature, and hunt with it.
The writing is beautiful and so vivid, like a painting in words. Absolutely amazing! A must read!

P. S.: I was so awed and definitely weirded out at the characters’ names 😅
P. S.1: Excuse me while I’m gonna go buy all the author’s other books 😬
