The characters never really gel, the protagonists' relationships don't make a lot of sense and/or didn't really make an impact on me as a reader. I do appreciate that Jean resists easy solutions for any of her characters problems and desires. The end felt very tacked-on, like Jean realized she'd written herself up to a sequel but didn't feel up to writing another book.

The prince obviously sucked from the beginning, though his sudden about-face on slavery was bizarre and out of character. Mari should have fuckin murdered that dude way before his shitty brother had a chance.
