I believe this book is the author’s debut novel- and in the most kindly way possible, it is evident at some points in the story. The way certain things are phrased seem slightly unsophisticated, which I’m not saying is a bad thing, it could just be writing style! It’s just my personal preference for a slightly more mature format. I did really like the African inspired setting, and the diverse cast of characters, however the plot felt full of YA cliches, which again, I found slightly tiring. I don’t think I will continue with the series when the second book comes out…
