This is a very heavy book focusing on two young adults (to me, people at age 20 and 21 are really young adults) who had been struggling with addictions pretty much throughout half of their lives. Their friendship was definitely toxic. Like they never learned to tell the other what they really want because they were two cowards who loved each other but were afraid of any changes and possible destruction of their current friendship if anything changed. Things were a little better after they became monogamous and officially dating each other, but the story did not really take a turn until Connor and Ryke showed up. They were the true stars who brought changes to Lily and Lo, and ultimately led them to face their issues and go to rehab/therapy. Without them and Rose, I do not think Lily and Lo would have the gut to change and would quickly spiral down their old path, based on their natural subconscious reactions to the stressful situations (for example the gala). I personally do really like either Lily and Lo (well they might be better in the second book and we will see), but I love Connor, Rose and Ryke.
