The Last
by Hanna Jameson
Set in a hotel in Switzerland as a world wide nuclear exchange happens. There's also a murder mystery concerning a child found concealed in a water tank. The main character, Jon Keller is at a conference, when at breakfast it becomes apparent that Washington has been bombed, and the President killed. In the aftermath, most of the hotel guests leave, and the story continues to describe the complex evolving relationships of the multinational survivors. Jon keeps a record of the events, describing the despair leading to suicides, and of developments within the group. He also shows how civilised behaviour can vanish post disaster.
His investigation has false leads, changing suspicions and alliances. Some of the survivors have back stories which relate to odd events that have happened in the past, and bear on the future.
Jon comes across as a man who believes in justice, but who has regrets about his family relationship. He is also keen that a record is kept for posterity. His steady advice helps to keep the group together.
Jon is clearly changed by events, and describes the fear and uncertainty - and sometimes hope - of post nuclear survival.
