The Neverending Story by Michael Ende

4.0

This is a fine young adult book. It resonates with my inner child, as Bastian gets to do things that I many times wished I could do: escape school to read, and get sucked into a book I was reading. It possesses that childlike sense of right and wrong, and a surety of the universe and how it is constructed.

As an adult, it falters in places, but the message at the end rings true to me now in my thirties, and I look at people who have no imagination and no sense of self or family.

The translation left a few odd turns of phrase, but did the story justice as far as I know. I do not know German, so I am at the mercy of the translator here.

Lastly, as a fan of the movie adaptation, the book is, in fact, better - and the movie is very well done.
