I really loved this book. It was the perfect pacing to me. I love fantasy books that leave me a little confused and guessing. That’s what this book did! I tried to guess a lot of the plot twists, but I was wrong or put it together by the time the twist was revealed. This books left off on an interesting note, and I’m excited to see how the second book will continue.
Unfortunately, the sapphic couple was the most disappointing part of the book. It’s the main reasons I read it, but I don’t think the characters have much chemistry. However, I am particular about which relationship dynamics I like. Don’t go into this book if you’re looking for a sapphic romantasy or a books where the sapphic romance is a major part of the story. Despite the fact that the main draw to this book disappointed me, I genuinely think it’s a great read.
My favorite part of the book was Jovis and Mephi’s chapters. I think Jovis is the most intriguing character in this book. He’s kind of morally gray imo (although you could agree that changes) which is my favorite character type. I also love characters that have to explore the world/go on adventures. I think it fleshes out a story, and it shows the world building.
Lastly, the magic is really unique. Some fantasy novels I have a hard time imagining the magic system (like The Jasmine Throne not trying to compare the two but it’s the last fantasy I read). However, I understand the system for the most part. It can be hard to enjoy a story with a magic system I can’t envision and don’t understand. The only part I didn’t understand was the language attached to Boneshard magic. In conclusion, go read this book!
