Binding the Shadows by Jenn Bennett

4.0

BINDING THE SHADOWS continues Cady's story as she struggles to control her Moonchild powers while also tracking down a mysterious drug that increases an Earthbound’s knack. In addition to this, Cady is meeting Lon’s in-laws for the first time and Lon’s ex-wife has shown up for Christmas unexpectedly. Needless to say this one brings a lot of angst and drama to the story and I felt so bad for Cady who just wants a normal life -- for a magician at least.

One thing I will say is that I was relieved to see that Yvonne’s reappearance doesn’t create problems for Cady and Lon’s relationship. Lon is completely over her and wants nothing to do with the woman who truly messed up his life and has been a terrible mother to their son. Cady and Lon are as strong as ever and the family they’ve built together with Jupe is just so sweet. And while Lon might be taciturn when it comes to expressing feelings, he finds other ways to let Cady know he cares.

What makes BINDING THE SHADOWS most interesting is the changes in Cady’s Moonchild powers as she begins to use them more. Just when she thought she had everything figured out her powers start to change and some really unusual things start happening. The last 10% or so of the book was so heartbreaking and even though this is a reread for me there were still a few things I had forgotten that really made me gasp in surprise. I’m looking forward to jumping right into the last ARCADIA BELL book.

Content Warning: references to sex by magical coercion, suicide, miscarriage (secondary character); Jupe’s mom allows him to get drunk even though he’s only 14
