Black Cat Crossing by Kay Finch

4.0

Sabrina has quit her job as a paralegal and gone to her Aunt Rowena in Lavender, Texas, to help her take care of her cottages that she rents to visitors since her aunt fell and broke her leg. Sabrina is trying to write a book, but so far has only rejections, then her friend Tyanne, who owns a bookstore sets up a meeting with an agent for Sabrina to meet with about her latest book she is writing. But Bobby Joe Flowers turns up, a good-for-nothing cousin of Rowena's and Sabrina's dad. He clalims that he is probably Rowena's half-brother and has a half-share in the cottages she owns. Rowena clobbers him with her crutch. Then Sabrina finds Bobby Joe dead by the river when she decides she needs to do some baking to help her concentrate that night. A black cat has shown up in town that everyone claims is El Diablo Gato, that brings bad luck. Sabrina tries to adopt the cat and names him Hitchcock, but others in the town are looking to trap it and get rid of it. On top of that, her aunt is prime suspect in Bobby Joe's murder. Sabrina is desperately searching for other suspects and is convinced the killing is somehow tied to the death of a girl in that same area of the river years ago. She is so busy with the search for suspects and trying to save the cat, that she's having trouble getting her plot lined out for the novel and the meeting with the agent.
