This Is Our Rainbow: 16 Stories of Her, Him, Them, and Us
by Mark Oshiro, Katherine Locke, Claribel A. Ortega, Ashley Herring Blake, Nicole Melleby, Alex Gino, Aisa Salazar, Mariama J. Lockington, Shing Yin Khor, AJ Sass, Lisa Bunker, Lisa Jenn Bigelow, Marieke Nijkamp, Justina Ireland, Eric Bell, Molly Knox Ostertag
A cute little collection of stories about queer kids, mostly female or afab (there was one? gay boy maybe?).
The characters came from a range of ethnic and social backgrounds, which was nice, although at times it felt a little forced.
The stories themselves varied from coming out and first relationships, to trying to find a space to suit with a new identity, to people established and comfy with extant identities just living their lives.
One story really irked me with it's simplistic attempts at correlating a story of slavery and one of being queer. Maybe the author was just making a clumsy attempt to be inclusive of historical situations, or writing for a junior demographic, I'm not sure.
My favourite was probably Guess who's Coming to Dinner. It was such a puzzle trying to work out what the Accord was and why it was such a drama to have someone come over.
Overall, a cute book, with some average stories that would appeal to young queer kids. A book that should exist.
